Inspired by the soft curves found in nature—a tree branch bent from the wind or rocks that have been carved by the elements—this elegantly unrefined bowl is hand molded out of resin for a perfectly, imperfect finish. Tina Frey Designs is a creative product design studio and workshop that produces timeless, functional objects designed to bring joyful serenity to people and their spaces. Since childhood, Tina Frey’s most fluent language was a visual one: colors, shapes, the details no one else notices. After 13 years in finance, she felt a call to do something more fulfilling and found her way back to the world of creating that had captivated her from such a young age. Tina’s livelihood is now creating, sculpting by hand each beautiful, useful piece in this collection in her studio in San Francisco, California.
While Tina designs and sculpts every piece, their objects are the product of a joyful collaborative effort. After their master mold maker creates the molds for each design, they cast the objects, usually in resin, in small batches by color. Each piece is then hand sanded which uncovers their unique essential nature. It’s an entirely human, hands-on process that results in pieces with a wabi-sabi quality that can’t be achieved by heavy machinery and mass production. Each “perfectly imperfect” object with its unique character and organic curves fosters a connection between creator and client, imparting joy and delight.
